SWA has presented the export statistics for 2024. By value, it decreased by 3.7% but increased 3.9% by volume. Single Malt is having a tough time. The value decreased by 17% and the volume by 18%.
Both India and Japan have large increases by total volume, and it is whisky in bulk which stands for the increase. To Japan, the volume of single malt whisky in bottles decreased by 22% but increased by 34% for malt whisky in bulk. For India, the corresponding figures were -24% and +23%. However, to both countries, blended whisky in bottles increased by 23% and 15%.
The three largest markets for Scotch whisky are Asia (29%), the EU (27%) and North America (22%) and the export value is falling in all three of these markets. The development of exports to Latin America and the Caribbean and to Turkey is positive.
In total, bulk whisky is less than 8 percent of the total value but a full 32 percent of the volume. Bulk takes a larger share of exports each year and there is a big difference in price. The average price of bottled single malt whisky is almost 15 times higher than for bulk whisky of all categories and just over three times higher compared to bottled blend.
